Home learning support for parents whose first language is not English

Volunteering Matters are providing support with home learning to families across a range of communities in Ipswich. Alongside existing, experienced volunteers, new volunteers will be recruited and trained as Learning Champions, representing the range of communities in the town, to support parents whose first language is not English:

  • Simple ideas to support your child’s reading
  • Helping with homework
  • Overcoming reluctance to learn at home
  • Myth-busting Maths
  • Creating a learning space/zone in your home
  • Coping with digital resources from school

Over Spring and Summer 2021 this programme will support 50 families directly, and recruit 12 volunteer Learning Champions, representing the diversity of the Ipswich community. These Learning Champions will help to connect schools and communities so that all parents feel confident in supporting their child’s education, in particular overcoming barriers created by digital literacy and language.

Schools can refer families that indicate they would appreciate support by emailing EALFamilies@volunteeringmatters.org.uk including staff contact name and phone number, VM will follow up with a call to discuss how support can best be offered.
